AI finisher-hero activations at the London Marathon
Every runner who lines up in Greenwich in late April has already decided which brands they let near the biggest day of their running year. A lot of that happens at bib collection. Over several days before the race, tens of thousands of finishers pass through the Expo at ExCeL to pick up their race pack, which hands a sponsor with a stand something rare at a live event: a captive audience that keeps coming back.
The character of this event: two crowds, not one
The TCS London Marathon is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, and its footprint runs far wider than race morning. Two moments matter for a sponsor. The first is the Expo at ExCeL London, a multi-day flow of runners who have to be there to collect their bib. The second is the day itself: the route from Blackheath to The Mall, past the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and the Embankment, with cheer zones and charity-team hospitality stacked along it. Each crowd behaves differently. The Expo audience has time and is standing still. The cheer-zone audience is mobile, emotional and already holding a phone.
The activation: turn a runner into a finisher hero
Our AI booth takes a guest's photo and returns a one-of-one collectible built around the finish they are chasing: medal round the neck, race bib on the chest, The Mall behind them. The image renders in well under two minutes, with the sponsor's logo placed at print quality rather than dropped on like a sticker. At the Expo we run this as a staffed kiosk with on-site printing, so a runner walks away with a physical card in a display case. Along the route we switch to QR and bring-your-own-device: a supporter at a cheer zone scans a code, uploads a photo and gets a share-ready file on their own phone. Same output, two delivery modes tuned to how each crowd moves. We have run an AI photo booth activation at the London Marathon, so we know how this runs on the ground.

Why finishers keep it
A branded tote goes in a drawer. A picture of yourself at the finish line, on the day you trained a year for, gets posted. That is the case for endurance events, and it is why we think they are underrated for this kind of work. Marathon finishers are already primed to capture and share the moment. The activation gives them a better version of the photo they were going to try to take anyway, with the sponsor in the frame because it belongs there.
Brand-safe output and data handling at scale
For an agency running this on behalf of a sponsor, two things decide whether it is worth doing. The sponsor logo has to render cleanly on every card across a multi-day Expo, from the first to the last, and guest data has to be handled properly. We render sponsor branding at print quality on each image, and we delete guest data after the event. Across thousands of images over several days the output stays consistent, because the pipeline is the same for card one and card three thousand. That reliability is the difference between a nice idea and something you can hand to a client with confidence.
It travels to other endurance events
The same format fits any mass-participation endurance event where finishers care about the result. Other city marathons work the same way. Cycling sportives lean the collectible on the kit and the climb. Obstacle races make the mud and the medal the whole point. If you sponsor a series rather than a single race, the booth can carry consistent branding from one event to the next while the styling changes to match each course.
The London Marathon card runs on the same setup we build for every activation. See how the format works in our definitive guide to AI photo booths, and how a fan-card activation plays out in our AI trading card work and at the IndyCar Grand Prix.
Frequently asked questions
How long does each guest take?
The AI image generates in about 30 seconds, and the full photo-to-printed-card workflow runs end to end in around a minute 45, all on-site.
Can the cards match our sponsor branding?
Yes. Your logo is placed to a brand-approved brief at print quality, on the card and on the share-ready file, never left to a phone filter.
Will it keep up with a big-event crowd?
Staffed booths are built for throughput, and a mobile route lets fans use their own phone when the queue outgrows the printer, so it scales from a hospitality suite to a concourse.
What happens to guests’ photos?
They are processed to generate the card and then deleted after the event, with no lingering face database.
Planning around a late-April race
The Expo is booked and built months ahead, so a sponsor deciding to activate at next year's race is really deciding now. The earlier the stand space and the creative direction are locked, the more the styling can be tuned to the sponsor and to the route rather than assembled at the last minute.
If you are planning a presence at the London Marathon Expo or along the route, we can scope the booth, the branding and the delivery for your team. Get in touch to talk it through, or try the demo to see a finisher card generate for yourself. You can also see our London Marathon demo.
